AAHMS OUTSTANDING FEMALE RESEARCHER

The Australian Academy of Health & Medical Science’s Medal for Outstanding Female Researcher is awarded annually to a leading woman researcher in Australia.

Professor Rachelle Buchbinder AO is a world-renowned rheumatologist and clinical epidemiologist who revolutionised the way the public and health practitioners treat and manage back pain. She is also a Fellow of the Academy.

“This award recognises all the people that I have worked with at various times in my career: it has never been a solo effort, but very much collaborative work,” Professor Buchbinder said.

2022

Infectious disease physician and virologist Professor Sharon Lewin is the 2022 recipient of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences Medal for Outstanding Female Researcher.

Professor Lewin is Director of The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity and President of the International AIDS Society. She is also a Professor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne, an NHMRC Practitioner Fellow and an AAHMS Fellow.

She was recognised by AAHMS for her body of research and global leadership in the search for a cure to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), as well as her contribution to the COVID-19 pandemic response

Cancer researcher and AAHMS Fellow Professor Georgina Long AO has been recognised with the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences inaugural Outstanding Female Researcher Medal.
